Visiting Brittany's cobblestone, half-timbered cities of Quimper or Vannes gives you some idea of what Brest was like before it - as one of France's most important naval and commercial ports - was all but obliterated by Allied air attacks during WWII. Rebuilt quickly after the war to provide housing for its residents, many of whom lived in temporary accommodation for an entire generation, today much of Brest's mid-20th century architecture is maturing as the city settles into its new skin.
